Empire total war warpath campaign

The native americans have an interesting battle style from a campaign map perspective. Am I killing a bunch of my own men though or is it relatively safe to fire into melee from the enemy back/sides of a combat? It seems to rack up the kills pretty well when it isn't disrupted by other units.

I had a question not just about this campaign but a tactic I usually use in other TW games as well: Is it stupid to shoot into melee? I know you don't want to shoot from behind your own troops since I've seen myself friendly fire my own guys in Shogun 2, but on of my common tactics I've also been using in Warpath is to hide two archers on the flanks, draw the enemy in to attack my main line, then jump out and pincer attack with bows while my main line is in front. My Cav is just a lite unit for keeping artillery busy, but bowmen actually get kills. Tribesmen break at the first sign of trouble and Warriors are decent but not much better than Tribesmen. I'm playing as Plains Tribes and it seems like my best normal unit is bowmen. Specifically 2 things about battle strategy: It's pretty interesting to play a primitive army VS one with guns and cannons. I recently bought the Warpath DLC for Empire for like a buck and I feel like I never see anything about this online.
